OHHH… It is a Girl again!!!!!

Killing your daughter and then smiling about it, doesn’t that sound too weird! For me it does. While browsing through the internet I came across a link http://www.itsagirlmovie.com/. Going through this page was the most shocking thing for me. I did knew that acts like killing the new born girls and female foeticide is practiced in India, but how people claimed of doing these acts was even more appalling.
The documentary film “It is a girl†highlights the plights of women who either themselves killed their daughters or despairingly watched them being killed. The most shocking of all was of a woman who killed her eight daughters and yet manages to give a sheepish smile and laugh about it. She says that she strangled her new born to death, which is something according to me no human can do. How can someone strangle a tiny human body, which just came to this world and is struggling for its life?
If you are a mother, who has carried the baby in the womb for 9 months, fed it, took care of it and after giving birth you realise it is a girl and you kill it. How can a mother gather courage to do that? I still wonder. I don’t have words to explain the feeling I get on the very thought of this topic. Was her laugh an expression of her satisfaction for doing it or helplesness? I suppose, it was her helplessness that she was trying to hide behind her loud laugh.
In India, women are born and brought up under a patriarchal society where a male dominates over women. As a daughter, a women is known by her father and brother’s name, after marriage by her husband’s name and then later on by her son’s name. Men seems to dominate women is every role and a daughter is considered as “Paraya Dhanâ€, who has to go to her husband’s house and live there for the rest of her life. Above all, she takes wealth from her father’s home in the form of dowry, which is a big loss. A son gets a wife and also wealth in the form of dowry and moreover earns a livelihood and takes cares of his parents, which is not expected out of a daughter. Then why should a girl live, who is just going to only take things from you?
What these people fail to understand is that if every person goes on a killing spree for girls, then whom will your sons marry to? It is highly shameful that people consider daughters as a burden in an era where India is signing nuclear pacts and predicts to have a promising future.
